Why We Shouldn’t Label Children

Is children labeling just bad words? The answer to this question is no. Children labeling includes all kinds of adjectives that you ascribe to a child and that you constantly impose on him. You are too lazy to a child, my hardworking daughter, all of the appeals in the form of naughty children are children labeling. Most people can guess that attributing adjectives such as lazy, naughty to the child may cause bad consequences, but attributing labels such as hardworking, successful to the child can also cause bad results.

What are the consequences of labeling a child?

A mischievous child will be called “Naughty!” By his mother, teacher or any adult. We have often witnessed his redness. So, does telling the child that he is naughty keep him from doing the same? Although surprising to some people, this makes things worse. A child who is constantly said naughty accepts this situation over time and repeats his mistakes easier because he has accepted that he is naughty and hides his mistakes behind it.

What does it mean to label a child?

The really surprising part is that if a child is always attributed to being hardworking, successful, it also has bad consequences. You ask why? Imposing any adjective on a child not only makes the child believe that it is, it also makes him think that it has to be. Addressing a child as hardworking and successful makes the child feel stressed because it feels like they have to be hardworking. The child feels the obligation to succeed in whatever he / she starts and has the fear of disappointing others in everything he / she does.

What are the dangers of labeling?

In general, we can say that it does not matter whether it is positive or negative, any labeling affects the child badly. Instead of ascribing the child about his character, just try to comment on the situation. How Does?  Instead of saying  “You are a naughty boy!”  you should say  “You are being naughty, please stop.” or “Only naughty kids do what you do, so please don’t do it again.”.
