Story of The French Sculptor Woman – Who Is Camille Claudel?
Camille, born in 1864 in Aisne as the first child of a wealthy family in France, is a French sculptor. Born as the second child of Louise Athanaïse Cécile Cerveaux and Louis Prosper, Camille is also the older sister of the French poet and diplomat Paul Claudel. His younger brother Paul, who was born two years later, is the only person who would be with her in her whole life. Camille Claudel’s brother Paul was born in 1868. Camille, who moved with her family to Bar-le-Duc in 1870, to Nogent-sur-Seine in 1876 and to Wassy-sur-Blaise in 1879, lived in many different places throughout her life due to these successive relocations.
After moving consecutively, Camille Claudel settled in the Montparnasse region of Paris with her mother and siblings in 1881. Camille loved playing with stones and mud like any child in her childhood, but unlike other children, Camille was quite skilled at shaping mud. Camille, who was a born sculptor, was one of the people with the great artistic spirit. Camille Claudel, who fell in love with mud, sculpture and art, had the chance to work with sculptor Alfred Boucher at Académie Colarossi. This was fortunate because it was not possible for women to study at the École des Beaux-Arts at that time.
Although girls were forbidden to study at art academies in Paris at that time, they could receive private lessons from famous sculptors if they paid for it. One of the names that helped Camille the most to move forward despite these sexist prohibitions is her father, because Camille’s father was an educated and understanding man, and the pressure of the environment supported his daughter to be a great artist by standing against the endless views of narrow-minded people. Camille has caught the turning point of her life thanks to the sculptor who can take private lessons with the help of her father.
Camille Claudel, who in 1882 rented a workshop with a group of young women, most of them British, including Jessie Lipscomb, met Auguste Rodin, who taught this group to sculpt in 1883. Camille, who started working in Rodin’s workshop in 1884, gradually became close friends with Rodin and even her lover after a while. He also modeled Camille Rodin. Camille, who exhibited her works in 1903, cited Rodin as the reason for her success, people knew she was gifted by birth. Moreover, Octave Mirbeau said he was a genius. Camille has many successful works, one of which is her famous statue Bronze Waltz. During this period when everything was going well, Camille Claduel was admitted to the Ville-Évrard mental hospital in Neuilly-sur-Marne on 10 March after suffering a mental illness.
Although her doctors kept informing the family about Camille’s health, her mother refused to take care of her and Dr. Although Brunet spoke of the importance of Camille’s reunion with the family in his letter to the mother, he did not even get a reply to the letter. Even his beloved Paul visited Camille only every few years. Camille Claudel died on October 19, 1943, after being alone in a mental hospital for 30 years. It is thought that Camille Claudel, who left nearly 90 magnificent sculptures behind, was accused of stealing Rodin’s ideas and planning to kill him.
